Burner reliability depends on the highest level of shut-off safety

Safety, efficiency and compliance with European regulations are major considerations in managing burners in the oil and gas industry. One European large gas and oil producer decided to make its heater and furnace units safer and more efficient by investing in new fuel gas lines and safety systems.

Extraordinary reliability is required from safety and on-off valves for burner management systems. Safety is a primary concern and unnecessary shutdowns of a heater can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars a day.

Especially in hazardous conditions, safety shutoff valves must close under all circumstances. The on-off valves in front of the burners are responsible for managing the correct heat temperature. For these valves, reliable switching is crucial to keep operational costs low and increase heater efficiency.

The refinery was looking for valves that met these requirements, would perform like new for a long time, and would meet or exceed the standards for tightness and safety established by the European health, safety and environmental (HSE) regulations. The company also wanted valves which could be maintained as simply and quickly as possible, as even regular inspection and maintenance shutdowns are costly.

In addition, the company required the best possible valve sealing to protect the health of its operators and the environment from fugitive emissions of hazardous and toxic fuel gases.

High-performance solution

All these requirements make valve selection for any refinery a challenging task. The customer chose Neles to help them find a truly efficient flow control solution for the entire burner management system.

Together, we selected Neles high-performance valves for the new fuel gas safety shutdown and burner on-off applications. These soft-seated ball valves are designed for highly demanding uses such as fuel line emergency shutoff and switching.

The valves fulfill all safety requirements for combustion and fuel handling systems. Approvals also include the Neles™ ValvGuard™ intelligent safety solenoid with partial stroke testing and diagnostic features that provide additional safety and predictive maintenance capabilities.

The valves’ seating design and material ensure long-term bubble tightness that withstands a high number of thermal cycles and valve strokes, exceeding the 250,000-stroke standard for automatic shutoff valves in gas applications.
